Congratulations on completing your orthodontic treatment! Getting your braces off or finishing your last aligner tray is a huge milestone. However, the journey to a perfect smile doesn’t end there. To keep your teeth straight for a lifetime, wearing a retainer is essential. At Damon Orthodontics, we specialize in providing high-quality, custom retainers in Spokane to ensure your new smile stays beautiful forever.

Our team understands that every smile is unique. That’s why we offer personalized retention solutions designed for comfort and durability. Whether you’ve just finished treatment with us or need a replacement retainer, our offices in Spokane Valley, North Spokane, and South Hill are here to help you maintain your results.

Why Are Retainers Important?

Teeth have a natural tendency to shift back to their original positions over time, a process known as relapse. This happens because the bone and gum tissue around your teeth need time to reorganize and stabilize after movement.

A retainer acts as a safety net for your smile. It holds your teeth in their new, correct positions while the surrounding tissues adapt. Without consistent retainer wear, you risk undoing the months or years of progress you achieved with braces or aligners. Investing in a high-quality orthodontic retainer in Spokane is the best insurance policy for your smile.

Types of Retainers We Offer

At Damon Orthodontics, we offer retention options tailored to your lifestyle and dental needs.

  1. Clear Retainers: Similar to clear aligners, these are made of a transparent plastic material that fits snugly over your teeth. They are virtually invisible, making them a popular choice for patients who want a discreet look.

  2. Fixed (Bonded) Retainers: This consists of a thin wire bonded behind the lower (and sometimes upper) front teeth. It offers permanent retention and is invisible to others, but requires careful flossing to keep clean.

  3. Traditional Hawley Retainers: These durable retainers feature a plastic base that sits on the roof of your mouth and a metal wire that wraps around the front teeth. They are adjustable and sturdy.

During your appointment, Dr. Clay or Dr. Paul will recommend the best type of retainer for your specific case to ensure long-term stability.

How to Care for Your Retainer

Proper retainer care in Spokane is simple but vital for keeping your appliance clean and functional.

  1. Clean Daily: Brush your retainer gently with a toothbrush and lukewarm water every time you brush your teeth. Avoid hot water, which can warp the plastic.

  2. Store Safely: When not in your mouth, always keep your retainer in its case. wrapping it in a napkin is the easiest way to accidentally throw it away!

  3. Keep it Cool: Keep retainers away from heat sources like hot dashboards, washing machines, or boiling water.

  4. Soak Occasionally: Use a retainer cleaner or a mild denture cleaner once a week to remove plaque buildup and keep it fresh.

When to Replace Your Retainer

Even with excellent care, retainers eventually wear out. Clear retainers may stretch or crack over time, while bonded retainers might come loose. If your retainer feels loose, looks damaged, or if you lose it, contact our office immediately.

Waiting too long to replace a lost or broken retainer can allow teeth to shift. We can quickly fabricate a new custom retainer to get you back on track before any significant movement occurs.

Frequently Asked Questions About Retainers

Do I have to wear my retainer forever?

Yes, retention is a lifetime commitment. While you may be able to reduce wear to night-time only after a few months, stopping completely usually results in teeth shifting.

What happens if I lose my retainer?

Call us immediately! The sooner we replace it, the less chance your teeth have to move. If your teeth have shifted significantly, we may need to discuss retreatment options.

How much do replacement retainers cost?

The cost varies depending on the type of retainer you need. Contact our office for specific pricing on replacement retainers.

Can I eat with my retainer in?

No, you should always remove removable retainers before eating or drinking anything other than water to prevent damage and trapped food.

Frequently Asked Questions:

At your initial examination, Dr. Damon may recommend braces (clear or metal) or clear aligners based on your dental needs.

Ask the doctors if you want a time frame. We have provided adult treatment anywhere from 3 months to 24 months, however most not exceeding 18 months.

Brush your teeth by using a regular soft toothbrush. Brush down from the top and then up from the bottom on each tooth; always brushing away from your gums. Use a gentle sawing motion to work the floss on each side of the two teeth the floss is between. Be careful not to pull with too much force around the archwire.

The Damon System uses memory shape, heat activated wires that work without needing painful adjustments, decreasing the amount of office visits necessary to complete treatment. With Damon braces, the average time between visits can range from 8-10 weeks. As you come close to finishing treatment, Dr. Damon may want to see you more often, typically between 4-6 weeks during your last few months, to fine tune your final tooth movements.

Upon arriving, each patient and parent will be seen by the staff and doctor who will acclimate you to our office and prepare for the initial exam. We will take the necessary photographs and X-rays to allow us to make a proper diagnosis. The doctor will then complete a thorough examination for you or your child.

The investment of your treatment will vary depending on your specific dental requirements. Once we complete a new patient exam and create a treatment plan for you, you will meet with a treatment coordinator to discuss the costs and payment plans available to you. We will work with you to create a payment plan that is tailored to your needs and budget.
