Damon Orthodontics

Advanced Orthodontic Solutions with TADS in Spokane

At Damon Orthodontics, we are committed to using the most advanced technology to achieve your perfect smile efficiently and comfortably. Temporary Anchorage Devices, or TADS, are a key part of this commitment.

TADS are small, biocompatible titanium alloy mini-screws that are temporarily placed in the jawbone. They act as a fixed anchor point, providing precise control over tooth movement. This allows our orthodontists to move specific teeth in a planned direction without affecting the surrounding teeth. By creating a stable anchor, TADS help us achieve complex movements that might be difficult or impossible with braces alone.

Benefits of Using TADS in Orthodontic Treatment

Incorporating TADS into your treatment plan offers several significant advantages, all aligned with our commitment to fast, comfortable, and effective orthodontic care in Spokane.

Enhanced Precision and Predictability

TADS give Drs. Clay and Paul Damon exceptional control over tooth movement. This precision means only the targeted teeth are shifted, resulting in highly predictable outcomes and the wide, confident smile you expect from Damon Orthodontics.

Potentially Shorter Treatment Times

Because TADS make tooth movement more efficient, patients often enjoy shorter overall treatment times. TADS are especially helpful when correcting complex cases like large gaps, tilted molars, or dental asymmetry.

A More Comfortable Experience

With TADS, light, steady forces are applied, minimizing discomfort while still achieving impressive results.

Avoiding More Invasive Procedures

TADS can sometimes replace the need for more invasive orthodontic procedures such as jaw surgery or tooth extractions, offering a simpler and less invasive solution for complex challenges.

The TADS Placement Process: Simple and Minimally Invasive

  • The idea of a mini-screw might sound intimidating, but the process is quick, straightforward, and virtually painless. Here’s what you can expect:

    1. Numbing the Area: We start by applying a strong topical anesthetic to numb the gum tissue where the TAD will be placed. In most cases, this is all that’s needed to ensure your comfort.

    2. Gentle Placement: Your orthodontist will then gently insert the TAD through the gum tissue and into the jawbone. You will feel a bit of pressure during this step, but no pain. The entire process takes only a few minutes.

    3. Activation: Once the TAD is in place, we can immediately attach a small spring or elastic to it and your braces to begin guiding your teeth into their ideal position.

    4. Easy Removal: When the TAD is no longer needed, removal is even simpler. Your orthodontist will gently unscrew it in a matter of seconds, and the site typically heals within a few days.

TADS FAQ

Are TADS painful to have placed?

No—TADS placement is quick and virtually painless. We use a strong topical anesthetic before placement so patients only feel some pressure, but not pain.

How long do TADS stay in place?

TADS are temporary and typically stay in place for several months, depending on your unique treatment plan. Once they have done their job, your orthodontist will remove them quickly and comfortably in just a few seconds.

Can you feel TADS in your mouth?

Most patients get used to TADS within a day or two. You may notice them at first, but they are small and won’t interfere with speaking or eating.

Do I need to do anything special to care for TADS?

Just maintain good oral hygiene and follow our cleaning tips. Your orthodontist will give you specific instructions to keep your TADS and gums healthy.

Are TADS safe?

Absolutely. TADS are made from biocompatible medical-grade titanium and are safe for use in the mouth. They are widely used and trusted by orthodontists worldwide.

Who should place TADS?

Only an experienced orthodontic specialist—like the team at Damon Orthodontics—should place or remove TADS to guarantee the best outcomes for your smile.

Frequently Asked Questions:

At your initial examination, Dr. Damon may recommend braces (clear or metal) or clear aligners based on your dental needs.

Ask the doctors if you want a time frame. We have provided adult treatment anywhere from 3 months to 24 months, however most not exceeding 18 months.

Brush your teeth by using a regular soft toothbrush. Brush down from the top and then up from the bottom on each tooth; always brushing away from your gums. Use a gentle sawing motion to work the floss on each side of the two teeth the floss is between. Be careful not to pull with too much force around the archwire.

The Damon System uses memory shape, heat activated wires that work without needing painful adjustments, decreasing the amount of office visits necessary to complete treatment. With Damon braces, the average time between visits can range from 8-10 weeks. As you come close to finishing treatment, Dr. Damon may want to see you more often, typically between 4-6 weeks during your last few months, to fine tune your final tooth movements.

Upon arriving, each patient and parent will be seen by the staff and doctor who will acclimate you to our office and prepare for the initial exam. We will take the necessary photographs and X-rays to allow us to make a proper diagnosis. The doctor will then complete a thorough examination for you or your child.

The investment of your treatment will vary depending on your specific dental requirements. Once we complete a new patient exam and create a treatment plan for you, you will meet with a treatment coordinator to discuss the costs and payment plans available to you. We will work with you to create a payment plan that is tailored to your needs and budget.
